The first Company affiliation was in 1988 with 873 Movement Light Squadron Royal Engineers(V) and a luncheon to commemorate this was held at Tallow Chandlers Hall on the 20th April 1988. The then Master Mr. Walter Balmford presented the formal Affiliation Document to the Honorary Colonel of 873 Movement Light Squadron, Major General P.C. Shapland. CBE. MBE. In 1991 advice was received that the role of 873 Squadron would not be in battlefield illuminations, as the searchlights would become redundant. The new role would be Explosive Ordnance Disposal and the Squadron would become part of 101(City of London) Engineer Regiment (EOD)(V). It was however agreed the link with 873 Movement would continue despite these changes. The name was then changed to 220(S) Field Squadron (EOD) TA (V) and in April 1992 a dinner as held to celebrate the 10th anniversary of this affiliation. In 1999 with continuing changed by the Government in the Territorial Army. 220 Searchlight Squadron was closed down and at the request of the Commanding Officer of 101 (City of London) Engineer Regiment the Court agreed to transfer their affiliation to 579 Field Squadron (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) (Volunteers) based in Tunbridge Wells.

The next Company affiliation began in May 1997 under the auspices of the current Master Mr. David Collins and through the good offices of Court Assistant Mr Simon Bartley. This was with The Aircraft Carrier HMS Invincible, at that time under the Command of Captain Roy Clare RN and Commander Amjad Hussain RN. The formal affiliation ceremony to commemorate this link with the Royal Navy and HMS Invincible, under the auspices of the then Master Mr. David Rowden. was held on the 2nd September 1998, at Tallow Chandlers’ Hall. It was attended by the then Commanding Officer of HMS Invincible Captain James Burnell-Nugent and Commander W.J.Keegan. A very active and ongoing Liaison continues with HMS Invincible and her Officers today.
In the summer of this year (2005) Invincible was "laid off" and the Company have been fortunate in that their link with the Royal Navy has been transferred, to take effect immediately, to HMS Illustrious, now Flagship of the Fleet.
The Company affiliation with HMS Illustrious, under the current Captain, Rear-Admiral Bob Cooling, continues and already a number of interesting projects have been undertaken. The Ship is expecting to be visiting London in November, at which time it is hoped a visit can be arranged.

To complete the affiliations with the armed services, contact was made via Court Liveryman Mr. John Neill with Air Vice-Marshal BH Newton CB OBE, Honorary Inspector-General Royal Auxiliary Air Force, and Honorary Air Commodore of 606 (Chiltern) Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force. Meetings were held in December 2001 and at the Company Livery Dinner held at Merchant Taylors Hall in March 2002, Air Vice-Marshal Newton announced that the formal affiliation had been agreed by the Royal Air Force for the link between The Worshipful Company of Lightmongers and 606 (Chiltern) Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force under the Command of Squadron Leader Richard Grimshaw RAF.
Although it is customary for each Livery Company to have a direct link with a City Church, like many of the other younger Companies no action had taken place on the matter. However, in discussing what action to take regarding the annual Carol service of the Company, usually held with a number of other Livery Companies in the city, the suggestion was made by Past Master Walter Balmford and Court Assistant Simon Bartley that the Company should seek their own direct link with a city church. As it happened both gentlemen had contact with St. Botolph’s Aldgate, one of the original four St. Botolph’s Churches at the gates of the City of London.
Meetings were then arranged with the Rector of St. Botolph’s Aldgate, The Revered Dr. Brian J. Lee. In December 2000, the first Company Carol Service, under the auspices of the then Master Mr John Webb was held at St. Botolph’s Aldgate, with an excellent attendance. Our second carol service was held at St. Botolph’s Aldgate in December last year, and the formal Service of Affiliation held under the auspices of the current Master Mr. Barrie Hurst, held on the 23rd May 2002. The Company’s first Honorary Chaplain, The Reverend Basil A. Watson, OBE. RN (Retired) who was appointed in 1982, and retired because of ill health in December 2001, and was delighted to support our affiliation with St. Botolph’s Aldgate and to commend to us the Rector of St. Botolph’s Aldgate to succeed him. In January 2002 the Reverend Dr. Brian J. Lee, DD, and Common Councillor for Portsoken Ward, was appointed as Honorary Chaplain to The Company.
